Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Academy Charter School (BELA), a new all-girls high school located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, focused on SISTERHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, STRENGTH and SERVICE is deeply committed to a 100% of our students completing college. Founded on the belief that academic and life preparation is equally as important; each BELA young woman will embark on her own personal and intellectual journey. Students will empower and uplift, while respectfully questioning norms to develop their own identities within their rich cultures and communities. This unique learning environment is designed for educators who are intrigued and motivated by the potential that exist within each of our Bedford Stuyvesant young women and thrives in a start up atmosphere where outcomes are clearly defined, but allows for creativity and risk taking as we define the process to meeting our goals as a school community.

For the inaugural school year, BELA will serve grade 9 ONLY and add a cohort of students each year through grade 12. Each grade will have 100 young women; at capacity, the entire school community will serve 400 students.

The Role
BELA believes that our greatest instructional strategy is our teachers. Effective teachers, who are continually learning and supporting our young women to meet high expectations, are key to each student’s success. BELA’s founding Math teacher seeks inspiration and challenge from their work; seeks to understand themselves and their colleagues to better achieve a shared goal; shows the urgency and gratitude that accompanies doing something you love; embraces the possibility of failure and believes failures are necessary for learning. The founding Math teacher has a rich understanding of math disciplines and the natural relationship that exists between content areas allowing the classroom to become a microcosm of real world mathematical experiences.

The position is a full-time position with a start date of August 1, 2017.

Teachers and Staff members at BELA will:
  • Create inspiring, challenging, and effective teaching learning experiences for all of our students
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, students and school leadership to build the school from the ground up
  • Share in the leadership of the school by taking on essential roles in addition to teaching
  • Be committed to serving all students, including Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners, in the context of the regular education classroom using a variety of inclusion models
  • Become part of a strong and supportive professional learning community
  • Enjoy and thrive in the lively and diverse world of urban adolescent young women while striving to create a model of public education that serves them well.
  • Design, facilitate and participate in experiences and conversations that relate to race, gender, class, and sexual identity in ways that empower students and foster community.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Teach up to four sections of Algebra and/or Geometry
  • Create and teach challenging and engaging lessons linked to Common Core state and International Baccalaureate standards
  • Use a variety of assessment techniques weekly, monthly, and each trimester to measure growth toward achievement goals
  • Provide individual and small group instruction until all students meet mastery
  • Serve as a mentor teacher to a group of 10-12 young women and teach one section of Leadership Academy
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to plan curriculum and build school culture across the school
  • Attend school and community events
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or relevant academic field is required; Masters degree preferred
  • Certification in Mathematics (6-12) by the NYS Education Department
  • Minimum two years of urban teaching preferred.
  • Strong belief in the mission and core values of BELA
  • Strong MS Office Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and/or a propensity to learn new systems quickly; Proficiency with Google sites and documents preferred
