Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Academy Charter School (BELA) is a STEAM focused all-girls high school located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, focused on SISTERHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, STRENGTH and SERVICE. The Role

The Postsecondary Counselor will execute the vision for hte postsecondary success and alumni program, which is designed to ensure that every graduate commits and is able to be successful in their postsecondary plan. This position will report directly to the Dean of Postsecondary Success.

The position is a full-time position.

Teachers and Staff members at BELA will:

  • Create inspiring, challenging, and effective teaching learning experiences for all of our students
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, students and school leadership to build the school from the ground up
  • Share in the leadership of the school by taking on essential roles in addition to teaching
  • Be committed to serving all students, including Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners, in the context of the regular education classroom using a variety of inclusion models

  • Enjoy and thrive in the lively and diverse world of urban adolescent young women while striving to create a model of public education that serves them well.
  • Design, facilitate and participate in experiences and conversations that relate to race, gender, class, and sexual identity in ways that empower students and foster community

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design an accessible and welcoming library space for students + staff
  • Maintain a digital record of all library/media materials 
  • Monitor the checking out and returning of books
  • Balance and maintain budget records for the library
  • Provide access to information through acquiring and organizing a diverse collection of resources
  • Coordinate the selection, ordering, circulation, and inventory of library/media materials
  • Provide leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats. 
  • Develop a library collection that supports the schools' curriculum 
  • Train + supervise co-op interns in the processing of books, technological operations, shelving, filling, etc. 
  • Lead teachers and other internal and external stakeholders to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and learning 
  • Ensure equitable access and responsible use of information by developing and maintaining a collection or resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school. 
  • Model effective strategies for developing multiple literacies like text, advertising, media online, etc. 
  • Teach class(es) that guide students to read and write for understanding, and for exposure to diversity of viewpoints and genres
  • Maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the school library program 
  • Strategically plan for the continuous improvement of the school library program 
Other
  • Take initiative on other projects as needed 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with student families
  • Complete professional development hours as requested by all BELA staff members

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master's degree and certification preferred 
  • Teaching experience in an urban school setting and in the subject to be taught preferred 
  • The ability to create a classroom environment where students are academically engaged and challenged and feel safe and supporter
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills 

Benefits and Salary
